How to choose a web designer or web design agency (2026)

By Pankaj Gaikwad · Updated 24 October 2026 · 3 min read

The short answer: choose the web designer whose real, live websites look distinctive and load fast on your phone, who tells you exactly who will design and build your site, and who lets you own the code and domain. Everything else (price, tools, process) matters less than those three things.

1. Judge live websites, not a portfolio of screenshots

Screenshots hide the things that cost you clients: slow loading, broken mobile layouts and clumsy navigation. Ask for links to three live websites the designer has built and open them on your phone, on mobile data.

  • Does the first screen appear in about a second?
  • Is the text readable without zooming?
  • Would you trust the business behind the site?

If every site in the portfolio looks like the same template with different photos, yours will too.

2. Ask who will actually do the work

Many agencies sell with a senior team and deliver with juniors or outsourced developers. Many freelancers design but hand the build to someone else. Ask directly:

  • Who designs the site?
  • Who writes the code?
  • Who will I speak to after launch?

Fewer hand-offs means fewer things lost between the design you approve and the site you get.

3. Freelancer, studio or large agency?

Freelancer Small studio Large agency
Who you talk to The maker The maker, with a process An account manager
Speed Fast Fast Slower
Cost Lowest Moderate, fixed quote Highest
Risk Depends on one person Low if they show work first Low, but expensive

For most small and mid-sized businesses, a small studio or an experienced freelancer with a clear process gives the best result for the money.

4. Check that you will own everything

Before you sign, confirm in writing that you own the domain, the code and the content. Be careful with arrangements where the site lives on the designer's account or a page-builder plan you can't move away from. You should be able to take your website to anyone, at any time.

5. Ask how the site will be found on Google

A beautiful site nobody finds is an expensive brochure. A good web designer should be able to explain, without jargon:

  • how page titles, descriptions and headings are set for your services and city,
  • how fast the site loads (Google's Core Web Vitals),
  • whether structured data is added so Google and AI assistants understand your business,
  • whether Google Search Console is set up and the sitemap submitted at launch.

6. Prefer designers who show you work before you pay

The safest way to hire is to see real work for your business first. Some studios, including Design Next, design a free working homepage before any payment, so you decide on the work itself rather than a sales pitch.

7. Red flags

  • No live links, only mockups.
  • Vague answers about who builds the site.
  • The designer keeps the domain or hosting in their name.
  • Monthly fees for a site you can't move.
  • "We guarantee first place on Google." Nobody can guarantee that.

Questions

How much does it cost to hire a web designer?

It depends on the number of pages, features such as ecommerce or a content system, and who does the work. Ask for one fixed quote that lists exactly what is included, and avoid open-ended hourly billing for a standard business website.

Is it better to hire a freelancer or an agency?

A freelancer is usually more direct and better value; an agency usually has more process and backup. A small studio led by the person who designs and codes the site combines the two.

How long does it take to build a website?

A focused business website usually takes one to three weeks once content is ready. At Design Next, a free homepage preview arrives in 48 to 72 hours and most sites launch in 7 to 10 days after that.

Can I hire a web designer from another country?

Yes. Design, feedback and launch all happen online. Design Next works from Mumbai with clients across India, Qatar, the UAE, the UK and Australia.
